The mission of Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation is to engage medical students and young investigators in a personalized research experience with preeminent cardiovascular scientists, and to foster the next generation of leaders in the field.
Medical Student Research Fellowship Program
The Sarnoff Fellowship Program offers research opportunities for outstanding medical students to explore careers in cardiovascular research. Applicants must be enrolled in accredited U.S. medical schools. Sarnoff Fellows conduct intensive work in a research facility, located in the United States, for one year. Prior research experience is not a prerequisite.
What makes Sarnoff unique is our lifetime commitment to the Fellow. A member of our Scientific Committee guides the Fellow during the research year and throughout the Fellow's career. The Fellow interacts with other Fellows, Scholars and Foundation leaders at the Sarnoff Annual Scientific Meetings, Sarnoff-sponsored regional events, and at other scientific conferences.

2011 Sarnoff Scholar Announced
The Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation is pleased to announce that Mark Jeong, MD (2001-02 Sarnoff Fellow) has received the 2011 Sarnoff Scholar Award. The Sarnoff Scholar Award is a competitive award that provides substantial financial support to Sarnoff Alumni who are committed to pursuing a career in cardiovascular research. The goal of the award is to enhance the opportunity for Sarnoff Alumni to successfully obtain "K" - level NIH support. This program supports the promising physician-in-training during the interval in which the Scholar is making the transition from a research fellow to a junior faculty member. Dr. Jeong will be working with Drs. Peter Buttrick, Carlin Long and Timothy McKinsey at the University of Colorado on the regulation of cardiac contractility by histone deacetylases.

Suparna Chandra (2009-10 Fellow) recently had a paper accepted in ATVB, Disruption of the Apelin-APJ System Worsens Hypoxia-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension.
Leslie Cooper, Jr., MD (1988-89 Fellow) has taken a new position as Director of the Gonda Vascular Center at the Mayo Clinic. The center is a multidisciplinary practice with 142 employees, including vascular surgeons, radiologists, cardiologists, internists, physical medicine physicians and podiatrists.
Hazim El-Haddad, MD (2007-09 Fellow) was recently made a Tinsley Harrison Scholar at his residency program at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. This program gives extra time during residency that is free of clinical duties to be able to focus on research and publication.
Deborah Ho (2010-11 Fellow) will be presenting a poster, “Reduced High-Molecular-Weight and Total Adiponectin Levels and Incident Symptomatic Peripheral Artery Disease in Women” at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Session in June.
Jennifer Jarvie (2009-10 Fellow) is a co-author on a paper to be published in the Journal of Women’s Health (anticipated February 2011) titled "Geographic Variance of Risk Factors Among Women. A National Campaign of Sister to Sister: The Women’s Heart Health Foundation." She is also co-author on a paper to be published in Current Cardiology Reports titled "Recognizing and Improving Health Care Disparities in the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in Women."
Patrick McConnell, MD (1996-97 Fellow) was recently appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery and Attending Surgeon, Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Heart Center of Nationwide Children’s Hospital at The Ohio State University Medical Center.
Robert Neumar, MD, PhD (1988-89 Fellow) served as Chair of the Adult Advanced Life Support (ACLS) writing group for the 2010 AHA/ECC Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiac Care that were published in October 2010.
James Pirruccello (2009-10 Fellow) published a co-first author paper in the New England Journal of Medicine titled “Exome sequencing, ANGPTL3 mutations, and familial combined hypolipidemia.”
Ron Rawlings, MD (2004-05 Fellow) is a co-author on a paper in The American Journal of Cardiology titled "Comparison of Effects of Rosuvastatin (10 mg) Versus Atorvastatin (40 mg) on Rho Kinase Activity in Caucasian Men With a Previous Atherosclerotic Event."
Leah Rosenberg, MD (2008-09 Fellow) received the 2010 David M. Levine Award for Research in Behavioral Medicine at Johns Hopkins Department of General Surgery Internal Medicine for her abstract based on research conducted during her Sarnoff Fellowship year.
David Strauss, MD, PhD (2007-09 Fellow) has recently published first-author papers in American Journal of Cardiology, Heart and Heart Rhythm (Link to papers).
David Strauss, MD, PhD (2007-09 Fellow) published a first-author paper in Heart Rhythm titled “ECG Index of Myocardial Scar Enhances Prediction of Defibrillator Shocks: An Analysis of SCD-HeFT” (PMID 208843789). He currently works at the FDA in the Division of Cardiovascular Devices and Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories.
Brian Williams, MD (2006-07 Fellow) recently won the Integra Award from the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Tumor Section 2010 for his presentation on the treatment of parasellar meningiomas with radiosurgery.
Catherine Wong (2009-10 Fellow) is first author of a paper to be published in the American Journal of Medicine (anticipated February 2011) titled, “Trends in Comorbidity, Disability, and Polypharmacy in Heart Failure.”
